Joe Street first picked up a guitar as a 9-year-old living in Merida, Venezuela. The native Texan returned to his home state as a teenager, where he took center stage in garage bands. During his college years, Joe moved from covers to original songwriting. Today—influenced by classic rock and roll, Latin rhythms, and country music—Joe brings his palette of original, acoustic songs to appreciative audiences throughout Austin.
Critics and fans alike respond to Joe’s wide range of styles. His high-energy pop/rock songs have listeners comparing him to Top 40 artists. The thought-provoking “So Alive,” for example, has been described as “a John Mayer-ish upbeat tune about the adrenaline rush of meeting after a long time apart.” Joe Street’s other original songs offer Texas country overtones, Spanish cadences, hard-driving chords, and hauntingly tender melodies.
Joe’s lyrics have also caught the ear of fellow singer-songwriters, who have given him kudos for approaching sensitive topics with a poetic sensibility. Many song lyrics resonate with audiences of all ages, including recognition of “a typical guy” in “In Front of Me” and choices made by “me, myself, and, of course, I” in “By Myself.” Other songs, such as the plaintive “Strength from Within,” hit an emotional nerve regarding kids left to fend for themselves.
In addition to private parties, Joe Street has performed for audiences at Austin clubs including the true Texas honky-tonk Giddy Ups. More mainstream venues include the Oak Hill Bar & Grill, Gino’s, B.B. Rovers, and the Saxon Pub.
